Chapter 01

Complete Bathroom Renovation

A complete bathroom renovation is a sequence, and the sequence is the plan: demolition, rough-in, waterproofing, tile, fixtures, then a punch list. Done in that order, nothing gets set twice. In Columbus's older brick and frame houses, the bathroom is often where a decades-old tub surround hides soft subfloor, so the first real decision comes once the old finish is off and the wood underneath can be seen.

Choices that touch plumbing get made while the walls are open: where the vanity drain lands, whether the toilet flange suits the new floor height, where the shower valve sits. Re-routing a main drain is licensed plumbing territory, and it is far easier to settle that before the tile is chosen than after.

Tiling and Flooring Installation

Tile only looks as good as what is under it. Shower walls and floors get a real waterproof layer before any tile goes up, either cement backer board with sealed seams or a bonded membrane, with the corners and the niche treated, because grout is not waterproof. Floors get flattened first, since a tile floor over a bouncing subfloor cracks along the grout lines.

Layout comes next. Tile is set out from the centre line of the room or the focal wall so the cut pieces land where they hide, not in the doorway. A hex or mosaic floor wants a clean transition at the threshold, and the grout joint is set once and held. Where tile meets the tub, the floor or an inside corner, flexible caulk goes in instead of grout, because those joints move through a Columbus winter and summer.

Chapter 03

Fixture Replacement and Upgrades

Fixture work runs from faucets to showerheads, and it is the quickest way to change how a bathroom feels. A new faucet means closing the stops, replacing worn supply lines and checking that the drain pops up and seals. A new showerhead or valve trim wants fresh thread tape and a flow test before anyone steps in.

Hard water leaves scale inside Central Ohio aerators and showerheads, so a bathroom whose fixtures run slow often just needs new ones. Vanities, mirrors and towel bars are set level and anchored into framing. A toilet gets a fresh wax ring, is set true on the flange, and gets a rock test before the caulk goes on.
